About the author
Theresa Bane is a reference writer specializing in comprehensive encyclopedic catalogs of mythological and folkloric beings, published mainly by McFarland & Company. Her Encyclopedia of Demons in World Religions and Cultures catalogs nearly three thousand demons drawn from the mythology and religious lore of societies worldwide, while her Encyclopedia of Spirits and Ghosts in World Mythology distinguishes ghosts from other spirit categories, such as ancestral or demonic spirits, across different cultural traditions. She has also written regional ghost-story collections, including Haunted Historic Greensboro and Folktales and Ghost Stories of North Carolina's Piedmont, both from Schiffer Publishing and grounded in North Carolina local history and legend. Across these books Bane's approach is consistently taxonomic and reference-oriented rather than narrative, organizing large amounts of folkloric material for readers who want to look up specific figures or traditions rather than read a continuous story.
