About the author
Sri H. W. L. Poonja, widely known to his students as Papaji, was an Indian teacher of Advaita Vedanta and a direct disciple of the sage Ramana Maharshi. His teaching took the form of satsang, spontaneous dialogues in which questioners were pointed directly toward self-inquiry and the recognition of consciousness as one's true nature, without prescribed technique or gradual practice. The Truth Is, published by Weiser Books, collects these satsangs in their fuller form, while This: Poetry and Prose of Dancing Emptiness (2000) distills the same teaching into a shorter volume of poetry and prose. Poonja became known in the West largely through students who carried his teaching onward after studying with him in India, and his direct, often blunt style of pointing to non-dual awareness has made him a significant figure in the modern popularization of Advaita outside traditional monastic settings.
