About the author
Shunryu Suzuki (1904-1971) was a Japanese Zen teacher who moved to the United States in 1959 and founded the San Francisco Zen Center, becoming one of the figures most responsible for introducing Soto Zen practice to a Western audience. His best-known book, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, compiled from his talks and first published in 1970, remains one of the most widely read introductions to Zen meditation, valued for its plain, direct treatment of sitting practice, simplicity, and the idea of approaching practice without preconceptions; it has been named among the 100 Best Spiritual Books of the Twentieth Century. Becoming Yourself: Teachings on the Zen Way of Life (2025) gathers further talks on the same themes, centered on his teaching that the way of sitting is for the practitioner to become themselves. Suzuki's teachings continue to shape Zen practice in America decades after his death.
