About the author
R. I. Page (Raymond Ian Page) was a British scholar of Anglo-Saxon studies and one of the leading authorities on runes and runic inscriptions of his generation, holding an academic post at Cambridge University. His books moved runic studies away from popular mystical readings and toward close philological and archaeological analysis of the surviving evidence. An Introduction to English Runes surveys how runes functioned as a practical writing system among Anglo-Saxons and their neighbors, correcting the common assumption that runes were primarily a mystical or magical script. Runes and Runic Inscriptions: Collected Essays on Anglo-Saxon and Viking Runes gathers his scholarly essays on evidence ranging from inscribed coins to stones from the Isle of Man, both reissued in revised editions by Boydell Press. Page's work is written for readers with a serious interest in early medieval linguistics and archaeology rather than in runes as a divinatory tool, and it remains a standard scholarly reference in the field.
