About the author
Robert G. Jahn was an aerospace engineer and professor at Princeton University, where he served as dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science before founding the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) laboratory in 1979. PEAR conducted decades of experiments on the effects of human intention on random physical systems and machines, work that remains controversial and is not accepted within mainstream physics or psychology. The Role of Consciousness in the Physical World, reissued by Routledge, collects essays examining the relationship between observation, consciousness, and physical reality, framing questions Jahn argued had traditionally belonged to philosophy and theology as also open to experimental study. The book gathers perspectives from multiple contributors on whether the universe operates independently of an observer or is in some sense shaped by the act of observing it. Jahn's engineering background lent his work a distinct methodological approach, applying laboratory protocols to questions usually addressed outside the physical sciences.
