About the author
Pim van Lommel is a Dutch cardiologist known for his research into near-death experience among cardiac arrest patients, published initially in the medical journal The Lancet and expanded in his book "Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience" (HarperOne). Working from case studies of patients who were clinically resuscitated after cardiac arrest, he examines reports of experiences occurring during the period when brain activity appeared to have stopped, and argues for a view of consciousness not fully reducible to brain function. His later book "The Crossover Experience: Life After Death, A New Perspective" continues this line of inquiry, documenting recurring features reported across many near-death accounts, from the sense of leaving the body to messages describing a return to life. Van Lommel writes for a general readership already interested in near-death experience research, alongside authors such as Raymond Moody and Jeffrey Long.
