Peter Novak is the author of several books published by Hampton Roads Publishing Company that develop what he calls the Binary Soul Doctrine, the idea that a person's psyche divides at death into two separate components with different fates. In "The Lost Secret of Death: Our Divided Souls and the Afterlife" (2003) he lays out this theory in detail, and in the earlier "The Division of Consciousness: The Secret Afterlife of the Human Psyche" (1997) he draws on mythology, psychology, religion, and reports of past-life regression and near-death experience to support it. A third title, "Original Christianity: A New Key to Understanding the Gospel of Thomas and Other Lost Scriptures," applies the same framework to early Christian texts, reading the Gospel of Thomas alongside the scholarship of Elaine Pagels and Marvin Meyer.
