About the author
Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947) was a Russian painter, writer, philosopher, and explorer, widely known for his large body of Himalayan landscape paintings and for the international cultural-heritage treaty that bears his name, the Roerich Pact. Alongside his artistic career, he led extended expeditions through Central Asia and Tibet in the early twentieth century, and his travel writing combines diary-based observation with the folklore and legends he encountered along the way. Shambhala: In Search of the New Era draws on this material to explore the legend of Shambhala as it appeared to him during his travels, while Heart of Asia: Memoirs from the Himalayas offers a fuller account of his Himalayan expeditions and the peoples he encountered. Roerich's writing sits at the intersection of travel narrative, mysticism, and early twentieth-century interest in Central Asian and Tibetan spiritual tradition, and it remains a primary source for that period of exploration.
