About the author
Michael Murphy is the co-founder of the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, and a central figure in the human potential movement since the 1960s. His book The Future of the Body: Explorations into the Further Evolution of Human Nature (Tarcher, 1993) surveys reported cases of extraordinary physical, mental, and spiritual capacity across cultures and historical periods alongside scientific research into exceptional human functioning, and remains one of the movement's most cited texts. Murphy is also known for Golf in the Kingdom, which introduced many readers to Esalen's ideas through the frame of sport. The catalogue also lists a Fear Dat New Orleans guide to the city's voodoo and ghost lore under this name; that title appears to belong to a different, unrelated author sharing the same name, since it falls outside Murphy's documented body of work on human potential and consciousness.
