About the author

Max Freedom Long was an American writer best known for his research into Huna, a system of Hawaiian spiritual and healing practice that he studied during years spent living in Hawaii. His book Recovering the Ancient Magic, reissued by Swedenborg Press and by bnpublishing.com in separate editions, presents findings from an eighteen-year study of Huna, describing accounts of fire-walking, mind-reading, and reported healing gathered from Long's fieldwork among Hawaiian kahunas. Long wrote for a general audience rather than an academic one, framing Huna as a coherent body of practical knowledge with parallels to other world spiritual traditions. His work helped introduce the term Huna and its associated concepts to English-language readers outside Hawaii, and it remains in print through small specialty presses that continue to serve readers interested in Hawaiian esoteric tradition and comparative magic.
