About the author
Maurine St Gaudens is the author and editor of Emerging from the Shadows: A Survey of Women Artists Working in California, 1860-1960, a four-volume reference published by Schiffer Publishing. The set documents the careers of 320 women artists active in California over a century, gathering more than 2,000 images alongside biographical and career detail for each artist. Volume I covers artists A through D and Volume IV covers S through Z, with the two middle volumes completing the alphabetical survey. The work spans styles from nineteenth-century realism through twentieth-century modernism, recovering artists whose output had largely dropped out of standard art-historical accounts. It is a research and reference work rather than a general-interest title, aimed at art historians, curators, collectors, and readers with a specific interest in California art or in the history of women artists in the United States.
