About the author
Mariana Caplan is a psychotherapist and writer known for her books on discernment and integrity within spiritual practice. Her work Eyes Wide Open: Cultivating Discernment on the Spiritual Path (published in English by St. Martin's Essentials/Sounds True, and in Spanish as Con los ojos bien abiertos by Editorial Kairos, 2011) argues that spiritual seeking, like any path, carries pitfalls that careful judgment can help avoid. Caplan writes from within contemporary Western engagement with Eastern and mystical traditions, addressing the gap between genuine practice and self-deception, guru culture, and spiritual bypassing. Her approach draws on both clinical psychology and years spent studying with spiritual teachers. The books are aimed at practitioners and students of meditation, yoga, and related traditions who want a grounded, critical companion to transformative practice rather than an introductory text.
