About the author
John Wisdom (1904-1993) was a British philosopher associated with Cambridge and later Oregon, known for his contributions to analytic and ordinary language philosophy and for essays exploring the boundary between sense and nonsense in metaphysical argument. A student in the Cambridge tradition shaped by Wittgenstein and Moore, he became known for a patient, exploratory style of philosophical writing that treated puzzlement itself as worth examining rather than resolving quickly. "Problems of Mind and Matter," first published by Cambridge University Press in 1934 and reissued since, offers an introduction to the application of analytical method in philosophy, distinguishing the clarifying aims of analysis from the truth-seeking aims of speculative philosophy, and working through classic problems in the philosophy of mind. The book is aimed at students and readers of analytic philosophy interested in its early twentieth-century development rather than at a general audience.
