Johann Caspar Lavater (1741-1801) was a Swiss poet, theologian, and writer best known for developing physiognomy, the theory that character and personality could be read from facial features, in his influential multi-volume work Physiognomische Fragmente. A Reformed pastor in Zurich, he corresponded with figures such as Goethe, and his ideas on physiognomy were widely read and debated across Europe well into the nineteenth century, though later regarded as pseudoscientific and, in some applications, as having contributed to harmful racial and criminal-type theorizing.
