About the author

Janet Adler is the originator of Authentic Movement, a discipline within dance and movement therapy that structures improvised movement around a relationship between a mover and a witness. Offering from the Conscious Body: The Discipline of Authentic Movement, published by Inner Traditions International in 2002, sets out the theory and practice of this discipline, drawing on sample sessions to explain how movement becomes conscious within it. Her earlier book, Arching Backward: The Mystical Initiation of a Contemporary Woman, is a personal account of an intense, unplanned mystical experience that shaped four years of her life and informed her later work. Adler's books are grounded in decades of movement practice and are addressed primarily to dance therapists, somatic practitioners, and others working in body-based approaches to psychology, rather than to a general audience.
