About the author
Jamie Sams was an American author whose books drew on Native American oral teachings to create tools for personal reflection and divination. She is best known for Medicine Cards: The Discovery of Power Through the Ways of Animals, co-created as a card-and-book divination system built around animal symbolism, and for Sacred Path Cards and its companion, The Sacred Path Workbook. Earth Medicine: Ancestor's Ways of Harmony for Many Moons, published by HarperOne in 1994, collects meditations, stories, and lessons framed around a yearly cycle, while The Thirteen Original Clan Mothers presents teachings organized around thirteen female archetypes. Sams's framing of her work as drawn from Native oral tradition was contested by some tribal scholars and organizations, who disputed her claimed affiliations. Her books remain widely circulated in the self-help and divination market, aimed at readers seeking accessible, narrative-driven tools for reflection rather than academic studies of Indigenous religion.
