About the author
Jake Richards is a practitioner of Appalachian folk magic who writes from within the conjure tradition he learned from his family in the hills and hollers of Appalachia, including his great-grandmother, grandmother, and a grandfather who worked as a Baptist minister and folk healer. Backwoods Witchcraft: Conjure & Folk Magic from Appalachia and Doctoring the Devil: Appalachian Backwoods Witchcraft for Conjuring Love, Money, Justice, and Success, both from Weiser Books, present root work, rituals, and family lore as practiced rather than academically reconstructed traditions. His Conjure Cards pair a fortune-telling deck with a guidebook drawing on the same regional divination customs, and In the House of Spirits examines the interplay of Christian religion and animistic belief in Appalachian mountain spirituality. Richards writes as an insider documenting a living regional tradition, addressed to readers interested in American folk magic specifically rooted in place and family lineage.
