About the author
Ho Peng Yoke was a historian of science specializing in traditional Chinese astronomy, mathematics, and divination, known for his long collaboration with Joseph Needham on the history of Chinese science and for later serving as director of the Needham Research Institute in Cambridge. His book Chinese Mathematical Astrology: Reaching Out to the Stars, published by Routledge, examines three sophisticated calculative devices used by the Chinese Astronomical Bureau from the eleventh century onward, work he presents as filling a gap in the English-language literature on Chinese divination, which has generally addressed the subject in less technical terms. The book treats Chinese astrology as a mathematical and astronomical discipline in its own right, reconstructing the methods Chinese experts applied rather than summarizing their cultural meaning alone. It is used as a scholarly reference on the technical history of Chinese astrological calculation.
