About the author
Emily Pierini is the author of Jaguars of the Dawn: Spirit Mediumship in the Brazilian Vale do Amanhecer (Berghahn Books), an ethnographic study of the Vale do Amanhecer, a Brazilian Spiritualist Christian religious order in which practitioners understand the worlds of the living and the spirits to regularly cross. Drawing on more than a decade of fieldwork conducted in Amanhecer temples in both Brazil and Europe, the book examines mediumship practice, ritual and cosmology within the movement in ethnographic detail. Pierini's approach is that of a researcher documenting a specific contemporary religious community rather than an advocate for its practices, situating Vale do Amanhecer within the broader study of Brazilian new religious movements and spirit mediumship. The book will interest readers of religious studies and anthropology, as well as readers with a specific interest in Brazilian Spiritualism and its ritual and social organization.
