About the author
E R Vernor is the author of Haunted Asylums, published first by Schiffer Publishing in 2012 and later in an expanded, self-published edition through Createspace in 2017. The book examines historic sanitariums and mental asylums built to treat illness but remembered, in Vernor's telling, for the suffering that took place within them, including the case of Mary Mallon, the Riverside patient known as "Typhoid Mary." The expanded 2017 edition adds further asylums and additional full-color photography to the original survey. The book combines institutional history with reported hauntings at each site, aimed at readers interested in the history of psychiatric institutions as much as at those drawn to ghost stories specifically. It is the sole subject Vernor has published on in this catalogue, giving the two editions a narrow but detailed focus.
