About the author
Don Hanlon Johnson is a scholar of somatics, the study of bodily awareness and movement-based practice, and a longtime faculty member at the California Institute of Integral Studies, where he helped build one of the first academic programs in the field. His two edited volumes here, Bone, Breath, and Gesture and Groundworks, both published by North Atlantic Books, bring together writings from the founders and leading teachers of major bodywork traditions, including figures such as Ida Rolf and Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, alongside phenomenologists who examined embodiment philosophically. Rather than a single-author guide, each book functions as an anthology and historical record, tracing how practitioners in different schools have approached the body as a site of awareness and change. They are suited to readers with a serious interest in the intellectual and clinical history of bodywork rather than casual self-help.
