About the author
Dawn Baumann Brunke writes about animal communication and shamanic practice, with a series of books published by Bear & Company that pair specific animals with themes of transformation and healing. Shadow Animals (2022) focuses on animals people fear or dislike, snakes, rats, and bats among them, as a way into shadow work. Awakening the Ancient Power of Snake (2020) traces the symbolic history of the snake from ancient wisdom-keeper to a figure of suspicion, and its connections to kundalini and dreaming. Earlier books, including Animal Voices (2002), Animal Voices, Animal Guides (2009), and Shapeshifting with Our Animal Companions (2008), build on interviews with animal communicators and accounts of interspecies telepathic contact. Dreaming with Polar Bears (2014) extends this into dream work specifically. Across six books, Brunke's consistent subject is direct communication with animals as a path to personal and ecological awareness.
