About the author
C. Herrmann is credited with two volumes on Egyptian amulets found in Palestine and Israel, Ägyptische Amulette aus Palästina/Israel II (Peeters, 2002) and Band III (Peeters, 2006), both written in German. The books are part of a long-running archaeological documentation project based at the University of Fribourg, cataloguing amulets and other small image-bearing objects recovered from controlled excavations across the region and situating them within the study of ancient Egyptian religious iconography as it spread into the Levant. The work is scholarly and descriptive rather than interpretive or popular, presenting objects alongside archaeological data for specialists in Egyptology, Near Eastern archaeology and the history of ancient religion. Readers without German or without a background in archaeology are likely to find the books demanding, but for researchers tracing the material culture of amulets and protective imagery in the ancient Near East, they serve as detailed reference volumes.
