About the author

C. D. Broad (1887–1971) was a British philosopher who spent most of his career at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he held the Knightbridge Professorship of Moral Philosophy. Broad wrote extensively on epistemology, ethics and the philosophy of mind, notably in The Mind and Its Place in Nature, but he was also one of the few mainstream academic philosophers of his generation to take psychical research seriously as a subject for rigorous inquiry. He served as president of the Society for Psychical Research and delivered the Perrott Lectures at Cambridge, later published as Lectures on Psychical Research, in which he applied careful philosophical analysis to claims of telepathy, apparitions and other reported paranormal phenomena. His essays collected in Religion, Philosophy and Psychical Research extend that same scrutiny to questions of religious belief and personal survival after death, treating them as open philosophical problems rather than settled matters of faith or dismissal.
