What belongs to the modern wheel
The eightfold cycle became standard in modern Pagan and Wiccan practice through the joining of two four-festival patterns. Individual names and customs draw on older regional observances, but the complete wheel is not an unchanged prehistoric calendar.
Solstices and equinoxes are astronomical points. The cross-quarter festivals are culturally dated and their names, boundaries and customs vary by region and tradition.
Names and hemispheres
Modern books often use Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane and Lughnasadh alongside Yule, Ostara, Litha and Mabon. Not all of those names share the same historical status. Practitioners in the southern hemisphere commonly shift seasonal dates by six months.
Choosing a useful book
Prefer authors who distinguish documented custom, reconstruction and personal ritual. A calendar should identify its region and hemisphere rather than presenting one seasonal experience as universal.
