⭐ Reader reviews
Reader rating
I keep coming back to this one. The historical context alone makes it worth the price. Recommended with reservations.
Been hunting for a decent copy of this text for ages. The text itself is dense but rewarding — you get out what you put in.
As someone who reads a lot in this field, I can be picky. The print is clean and easy on the eyes for long sessions. The font runs small in the appendices. Solid, if not essential.
A friend in my study group recommended this one. It rewards patience more than any book I've bought this year. It's become a regular reference in my practice. Shipping was quick too.
This edition successfully revitalizes Florence Scovel Shinn’s seminal texts for a modern demographic, offering fresh, gender-inclusive language without sacrificing her distinctive voice. It is ideal for those interested in the Game of Life and practical metaphysics. However, readers seeking rigorous academic analysis or complex theological debates will find it lacking. Similarly, those who prefer dense, unedited historical primary sources may feel alienated by the updated dialect. It is not suited for skeptics of New Thought philosophy or anyone expecting a technical manual rather than anecdotal spiritual guidance.
❓ Frequently asked questions
📖 Who should read this
Seekers of New Thought philosophy, women navigating career or relationship transitions, and anyone tired of rigid spiritual dogma who prefers Shinn’s humorous, story-driven approach to metaphysical living and practical daily application.
🎯 Key themes and symbolism
Manifestation Through Intuition
Shinn argues that the subconscious mind responds to the images we hold. She teaches that by quieting the rational mind and listening to the inner voice, one can attract desired outcomes. The text emphasizes trusting sudden impulses and ideas as direct guidance from the Divine, rather than relying solely on logical planning or forced effort.
The Power of the Spoken Word
Central to her philosophy is the belief that words create reality. Shinn instructs readers to use affirmative statements and bless others instead of criticizing. She demonstrates how negative speech reinforces lack, while positive, authoritative declarations align the individual with abundance, shifting their external circumstances to match their internal spiritual state.
Surrender and Divine Timing
The work encourages letting go of personal will and anxiety regarding outcomes. Shinn suggests that when we surrender our worries to the Divine, a higher plan unfolds in perfect timing. This theme focuses on the relief found in trusting the universe’s wisdom over one’s own limited understanding, allowing events to resolve themselves effortlessly.
