About the author
Sophia Elizabeth De Morgan (1809-1892) was an English writer on spiritualism and the wife of the mathematician and logician Augustus De Morgan, with whom she shared an interest in psychical phenomena documented in their correspondence. Her book From Matter to Spirit, first published in 1863 under the initials 'CD' with a preface by her husband, argues from her own observations of seances and mediumship toward a spiritual interpretation of psychic phenomena; it has since been reissued by both Cambridge University Press and Routledge. Threescore Years and Ten collects her reminiscences alongside letters to and from Augustus De Morgan and others, offering a more personal, autobiographical record of her life and the intellectual and spiritualist circles she moved in during Victorian England. She was also the mother of the ceramicist William De Morgan.
