About the author
Stuart R. Kaplan is the founder of U.S. Games Systems, the tarot card publisher he established in 1968, and one of the most prominent figures in twentieth-century tarot publishing and scholarship. He is known for the multi-volume Encyclopedia of Tarot and for reviving and republishing numerous historical tarot decks, including the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. Pamela Colman Smith: The Untold Story (2018, U.S. Games Systems), co-written with Mary K. Greer, Elizabeth Foley O'Connor, and Melinda Boyd Parsons, is the result of years of research into the life and artistic career of Smith, illustrator of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck. Kaplan also contributed the interpretive verses for the Blue Bird Lenormand deck, an illustrated Lenormand card set with an accompanying instruction booklet. His work sits at the intersection of publishing, collecting, and scholarship, aimed at readers and collectors with a serious interest in tarot and cartomancy history rather than at casual buyers of a single deck.
