About the author

Rev. George Oliver was born in 1782 in Papplewick, Nottinghamshire, England. An Anglican clergyman, he dedicated a significant portion of his life to the study and exposition of Freemasonry, becoming one of the most influential Masonic writers of the 19th century. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, Oliver was ordained in 1806 and served various parishes, including Scopwick, Lincolnshire, where he died in 1867. Oliver's prolific output included over 30 volumes on Masonic history, philosophy, and ritual. His early work, "The Antiquities of Freemasonry" (1823), established his reputation, followed by seminal texts such as "The Historical Landmarks and Other Evidences of Freemasonry" (1846) and "The Theocratic Philosophy of Freemasonry" (1840). He also contributed significantly to "The Universal Masonic Library," a multi-volume republication of standard Masonic works. While some of his historical assertions have since been challenged by modern scholarship, Oliver's writings were instrumental in codifying and popularizing a particular spiritual and philosophical interpretation of Freemasonry.
