About the author
Ellen Baumler writes on Montana history and folklore, with particular attention to the state's reputed hauntings. Haunted Helena: Montana's Queen City Ghosts (History Press, 2014) traces the city's story from its gold-rush origins through the wealth and political conflict that followed, connecting that turbulent history to the ghost stories still told about the town. Spirit Tailings: Ghost Tales from Virginia City, Butte and Helena (Montana Historical Society Press, 2002) draws on oral testimony, diaries, journals and newspaper accounts to assemble hauntings from three of Montana's best-known historic towns, while Montana Chillers: 13 True Tales of Ghosts and Hauntings gathers further stories for a general readership. Baumler's books treat Montana's frontier past, marked by violence and sudden death, as the backdrop that gives its ghost lore its particular density, and they are aimed at readers of regional history as much as readers of ghost stories.
