About the author
Edward C. Whitmont was a physician, Jungian analyst, and homeopath who worked to bring depth psychology and homeopathic medicine into dialogue with each other. He trained in analytical psychology through personal contact with associates of Carl Jung, including M. Esther Harding and Karl König, and built a practice that combined psychiatric and homeopathic treatment. His book The Alchemy of Healing: Psyche and Soma (North Atlantic Books, 1996) draws on that combined practice to examine how psychological and physical symptoms interact in illness and treatment. Psyche and Substance: Essays on Homeopathy in the Light of Jungian Psychology (North Atlantic Books, revised edition 1993) applies Jungian ideas about archetypes to homeopathic remedies, arguing that the resemblance between a substance and the symptoms it treats points to shared underlying patterns in psyche and body. Whitmont is also known for an earlier work, The Symbolic Quest, a study of Jungian analytical psychology. His writing continues to be read by homeopaths and Jungian practitioners interested in the theoretical links between the two fields.
