About the author
Carsten Colpe (1929-2009) was a German scholar of comparative religion and professor at the Free University of Berlin, known for his work on Gnosticism, Iranian religion, and Hermetic and Manichaean texts. Among his major contributions to German-language scholarship on esotericism is his two-part edition Das Corpus Hermeticum Deutsch, published by Frommann-Holzboog, which brought together the Greek Hermetic treatises, the Latin Asclepius, related Nag Hammadi texts, and the Stobaeus excerpts in critical German translation with extensive commentary. Colpe's editorial work situates the Hermetica within the broader landscape of late antique religious and philosophical literature, connecting it to the Gnostic and Neoplatonic currents he studied throughout his career. These volumes remain standard reference editions for German-speaking readers of ancient esoteric and religious-historical texts, valued by scholars and serious students of Hermetic and Gnostic traditions rather than by a general audience.
