About the author
Pamela Colman Smith (1878–1951) was the artist behind the Rider-Waite tarot deck, first published in 1909 under the guidance of occult scholar Arthur Edward Waite. Smith, an illustrator and stage designer associated with the Golden Dawn circle, gave the deck's minor arcana fully illustrated scenes rather than the repeating-suit patterns common before it, a choice that made the deck unusually easy to read and helped establish it as the template most later tarot decks still follow. The catalogue's editions built on her work include the Miniature Rider-Waite Tarot, the Giant Rider-Waite Tarot Deck, and the Original Rider-Waite Tarot Set, all published by U.S. Games Systems and reproducing her original artwork in different formats and color treatments. Smith received little recognition or financial reward during her lifetime, and her authorship of the deck's imagery has only been more fully credited in recent decades.
