About the author

Alphonse Louis Constant, better known as Eliphas Lévi, was a pivotal figure in 19th-century Western esotericism. Born February 8, 1810, in Paris, France, he was initially educated for the Catholic priesthood. However, a crisis of faith and a romantic entanglement led him to abandon his clerical path before ordination. For a period, he engaged in socialist journalism and writing, often facing imprisonment for his radical views. Around the mid-1840s, Lévi transitioned his focus entirely to occult studies, adopting his famous Hebrew-derived pseudonym. His magnum opus, Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie (Dogma and Ritual of High Magic), published in two volumes in 1854 and 1856 (often translated as Transcendental Magic ), became the foundational text for modern occultism. Through this work and others like Histoire de la Magie (1860) and La Clef des Grands Mystères (1861), he synthesized diverse esoteric traditions—Kabbalah, Hermeticism, alchemy, and Tarot—presenting magic as a science of the will and imagination operating through the 'astral light'. Lévi's systematic approach and eloquent prose revitalized a fragmented esoteric landscape.
