J. S. Forsyth's 'Demonologia: or, Natural Knowledge Revealed,' published in 1865, examines the history of human credulity, fanaticism, and deception. The book scrutinizes beliefs and practices associated with the occult, including demonology, cabalistic doctrines, and astrological interpretations. Forsyth aims to expose the mechanisms of superstition, presenting them not as supernatural phenomena but as products of human psychology and social influence. He analyzes various forms of imposture and delusion, connecting them to historical and contemporary examples of enthusiasm and misguided belief. The work is structured as an exposé, dissecting the 'doctrine, caballa, and jargo' that underpin these superstitions. Forsyth's approach seeks to demystify these subjects by grounding them in natural knowledge, thereby revealing the roots of what is often perceived as the supernatural. The text challenges readers to consider the psychological and societal factors that foster belief in the occult and superstitious practices. It functions as a critical examination of how these ideas have been constructed and maintained across different eras.

Exactly what I was looking for. It reads better in small doses — a chapter at a time with notes. The font runs small in the appendices. Good, with the caveats above.
First purchase from this shop. Not a light read, but far more accessible than I feared. My only quibble is the cover feels thinner than expected. Happy enough with the purchase.
Not my usual area but wanted to branch out. It's become a regular reference in my practice. Every rereading turns up something I missed. Will be gifting a copy to a friend.
